Tuesday 9 January – North-east London RSPB illustrated talk: Wildlife of South Essex

Meet: 8pm at the Gwinnell Room, St Mary’s Church, 207 High Road, South Woodford, E18 2PA.

Are Suffolk and Norfolk the glamour spots for wildlife? Neil Phillips does most of his wildlife photography in Essex, and reckons it is under-rated.

Price: £4.00 for RSPB & Wren members; £4.50 for non-members (no charge for schoolchildren).

Tuesday 16 January – Nature Ramble

Meet 10.15am at Stratford station, outside Jubilee line platforms 13-15. NB later start time!!

We’ll be visiting the Walthamstow Wetlands, London’s newest nature reserve, spreading across 211ha of the River Lea reservoirs. We’ll then walk through Walthamstow Marshes and beside the River Lea to Lea Bridge, from where there are trains and buses back to Stratford.

This will only be a short walk, about three miles, so there will be plenty of time to explore the Wetlands.

Just turn up, no need to book. Bring a snack, drink and Oyster or Freedom Pass.

Sunday 21 January – Waterbird Count

Meet: 10am at the Tea Hut, Wanstead Park.

The first of the year’s monthly counts of ducks, grebes and other waterbirds is likely to produce some very big counts, especially of Gadwall and Mallard. The information we collect is fed into a national database to monitor the health of these birds’ populations. The count starts at 10am and usually finishes around 12:30.

Free, organised by the The WREN Group No experience necessary.

Sunday 28 January – Winter Nature Club

Meet: 11-1 at the Temple, Wanstead Park.

On the same weekend as the RSPB Big Garden Bird Watch, join us on a walk by the Heronry Lake to see what birds are around. We will identify and record them as part of the RSPB Bird Watch. We will make some bird models and listen to some stories to get your little ones exploring their natural environment.

Children aged 2-7 years. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Cost £3.50 per child.

Part of a planned series of quarterly events run by volunteers and parents which are themed around the seasons.
